The man, the myth, the NWA… Ice Cube

A hand-carved piece of wall art celebrating one of the most recognisable names to come out of West Coast hip-hop.

I carved this Ice Cube artwork by hand from MDF, drawing on the bold shapes, heavy lettering, and graphic style of traditional tattoo flash.

The design is inspired by the visual language of old-school tattooing while paying tribute to Ice Cube and his place in hip-hop history, from his early days with N.W.A. through to his solo career.

The artwork is printed using Flint water-based block ink, which gives the carved surface a solid, slightly textured finish. You can see and feel the carving underneath the print, giving it more depth and character than a standard poster or digital print.

I’ve paired the artwork with an upcycled op-shop frame, keeping with the rougher, found-object feel of the work. The frame has its own existing marks and character rather than looking like a brand-new manufactured frame, which works well with the carved and printed artwork.

This is hand-carved wood wall art made for people who are into hip-hop, N.W.A., Ice Cube, traditional tattoo art, and handmade pieces with a bit of attitude. The combination of wood carving and tattoo-inspired graphics gives it a feel somewhere between a vintage sign, a flash design, and a piece of music memorabilia.

My work takes a lot of inspiration from traditional tattoo wood carving, old-school tattoo flash, and bold graphic imagery. I like the physical process of carving into the material and letting the texture of the wood and ink become part of the finished artwork.
