This one's a personal piece. In Māori mythology, a taniwha is a powerful supernatural water spirit or monster that lives in deep rivers, dark caves, lakes, or the sea. They act as protective guardians for a tribe and place, or as dangerous predators. In te reo Māori, awa primarily means river, stream, creek, or channel.
